The monadic theory of finite representations of infinite words

چکیده
In this paper, we consider existential monadic second-order logic (monadic Σ1) on finite unary graphs, that is finite graphs with functional edge relation. These can be seen as finite encodings of ultimately periodic words. We show that, on these graphs, the bisimulation invariant fragment of monadic Σ1 equals the bisimulation invariant fragment of monadic second order logic itself, and that MSO-definable bisimulation closed classes of graphs coincide with classes of graphs definable by means of (an extension of) finite state ω-word automata. This result can be seen as a translation, onto finite representations of infinite words, of Büchi’s automata-theoretic characterization of S1S. In terms of descriptive complexity, this result contrasts with the situation on arbitrary unary structures where bisimulation invariant monadic Σ1 properties only define languages that are closed with respect to the prefix topology.

Weak Cost Monadic Logic over Infinite Trees
Cost monadic logic has been introduced recently as a quantitative extension to monadic second-order logic. A sentence in the logic defines a function from a set of structures to N∪{∞}, modulo an equivalence relation which ignores exact values but preserves boundedness properties. The rich theory associated with these functions has already been studied over finite words and trees. We extend the ...
متن کاملOn Infinite Transition Graphs Having a Decidable Monadic Theory
We deene a family of graphs whose monadic theory is (in linear space) reducible to the monadic theory S2S of the complete ordered binary tree. This family contains strictly the context-free graphs investigated by Muller and Schupp, and also the equational graphs deened by Courcelle. Using words as representations of vertices, we give a complete set of representatives by preex rewriting of ratio...
متن کاملThe Theory of Rational Relations on Transfinite Strings
In order to explain the purpose of this paper, we recall briefly how the theory of “rationality” developed in the last fourty years. The theory of sets of finite strings recognized by finite automata, also known as regular or rational sets was developed in the fifties. It rapidly extended in two directions. Indeed, by solving the decidability problem of the second order monadic theory of one su...
متن کاملInfinite and Bi-infinite Words with Decidable Monadic Theories
We study word structures of the form (D,<,P ) where D is either N or Z, < is the natural linear ordering on D and P ⊆ D is a predicate on D. In particular we show: (a) The set of recursive ω-words with decidable monadic second order theories is Σ3complete. (b) Known characterisations of the ω-words with decidable monadic second order theories are transfered to the corresponding question for bi-...
متن کاملOn the Expressive Power of 2-Stack Visibly Pushdown Automata
Visibly pushdown automata are input-driven pushdown automata that recognize some non-regular context-free languages while preserving the nice closure and decidability properties of finite automata. Visibly pushdown automata with multiple stacks have been considered recently by La Torre, Madhusudan, and Parlato, who exploit the concept of visibility further to obtain a rich pushdown-automata cla...
